What are the different types of Cat flea and tick treatments?

There are numerous flea and tick treatments available for our feline friends. The Bondi Vet Team have put together a list of 5 cat flea treatments to choose from.

Chewable tablets:

Although less popular than topical treatment, Chewable Oral Tablets are one of the most effective methods of flea and tick treatment. They are given internally via your cat's mouth and are great for cats that can't tolerate topical flea preventatives.

Spot-On treatments:

Bravecto, Moxiclear, Advocate are easy to use liquid topical solutions that are applied onto one spot on the cat's skin between the shoulder blades. The liquid medication spreads across your cat's skin and is stored in the oil glands. It self-distributes continuously through the hair follicles for one month.

Cat Flea Collars:

Seresto cat flea collar contains the active ingredients imidacloprid and flumethrin which are diffused through the lipid (fatty) layer in skin and on hair. One Seresto collar now provides 8 months of protection against paralysis ticks and against fleas. The collar is water-resistant and can remain on the cat even when bathing. It is not recommended for kittens younger than 10 weeks of age. Don’t allow children to play with the collar or put it in their mouth. Always consult your vet to decide if this product is right for your cat.

Cat Flea Shampoo:

Fidos flea and tick shampoos contains the natural insecticide pyrethrin, it controls fleas and ticks on dogs and cats. Safe to use on puppies and kittens.

Powder:

Pestene insect powder combats lice, mites and fleas in one easy step. Simply add a portion of the powder to your cat's environment, bedding and carpets and sprinkle some liberally through their coat. Where possible, massage the powder into their skin.

When should I see a vet?

If you can’t find any signs of actual fleas on your cat or in the environment, but other symptoms are present (for example, your cat is still scratching) it might be time to speak to a vet.
